One of the things I love most about living in the New Forest is how alive it is β not just during the day, but at night too. It reminds me of the visible vs the hidden work that shapes our lives. The conscious vs the subconscious mind.
By day, I spend far too long watching the chickens, cows, donkeys, ponies, and bees. I watch them forage, communicate, and (mostly) work together in perfect harmony.
By night, when the garden quietens down, I sometimes sit outside with a glass of wine and a bat detector, listening to the high-pitched clicks of bats swooping overhead. It drives my husband potty!
Bats arenβt as beloved as bees. Theyβre mysterious, often misunderstood. But despite their differences, they offer a shared lesson: we’re often irrationally scared of bats, they are hidden from us and as far as most people are concerned, of no use to us, whereas we see bees as busy, productive and very useful. Itβs the same with our thoughts and beliefs: much of the hidden work shaping our lives happens quietly in the background.
ππ¦ The Hidden Work of Bees and Bats
Bees and bats are small and often overlooked, yet each plays a vital role in the ecosystem.
Bees pollinate the flowers and crops that feed us.
Bats feast on insects β including garden pests β and in many parts of the world, theyβre essential pollinators too.
Most people couldnβt identify a bat or even a honey bee if they saw one β bees are usually imagined as fluffy bumblebees. And yet, their impact is immense.
π The Visible vs Hidden Work That Shapes Our Lives
Bats work in the shadows of night, many of our limiting beliefs and traumas live below the surface of our awareness. You might not notice them, but they quietly shape our choices, our behaviours, and the results we experience.
And just as bees buzz visibly back and forth in the daylight, we go about our daily lives β thinking weβre making conscious choices, while being subtly guided by beliefs we didnβt even realise we were carrying.
Both are happening at once:
- The unseen, subconscious β like bats flitting through the night β works quietly beneath the surface. It stores our deeply held beliefs, past experiences, and emotional memories. Its role is often to keep us safe, nudging us toward comfort, protecting us from risk, and steering us away from uncertainty.
- The seen, conscious layer β our daily choices, words, habits, and actions. This is the busy bee hum of visible work, where our lives appear to take shape.
And yet, so often, the visible world is shaped by the invisible one.
We may think we’re choosing freely, but underneath, our subconscious is at the helm: avoiding conversations, holding back dreams, delaying decisions, or saying yes when we really mean no.
When we bring awareness to this dance β the balance between the hidden and the visible, the bats and the bees β we begin to live with greater freedom. We can ask ourselves: Is this belief still true? Does this fear still serve me?
And in that awareness, we create space for new choices. For conscious action. For flight in new directions. If you want to know more about the Law of Attraction and how to master the power of the universe go here.
πΏ Nature as a Teacher
Listening to bats in my garden reminds me how essential it is to honour both sides of ourselves: the visible and the hidden.
If we only focus on the βdaytimeβ β the doing, the outer world β we miss the deeper truths that live in the quiet.
If we only look inward without action, then nothing blossoms on the outside.
Balance is key. Bees by day, bats by night.
π« A Gentle Reminder
Next time you find yourself stuck in a loop of self-doubt or limiting beliefs, think of the bats. Just because you canβt see whatβs shaping your reality doesnβt mean it isnβt there. Go here to read an article about limiting beliefs and how to overcome them.
And the next time you set an intention or take a visible step toward a dream, think of the bees β steady, purposeful action that helps life bloom.
Nature is always whispering to us:
Whatβs hidden matters just as much as whatβs seen.
β¨ Final Thought & Invitation
Here in Brockenhurst, Iβm reminded daily that life is a delicate dance between the visible and invisible.
What we nurture in both realms β the bee work and the bat work β quietly, but powerfully, shapes our world.
π¬ Iβd love to hear your reflections:
What hidden βbat workβ is quietly shaping your life right now?
And what βbee workβ β the visible actions β are you putting into the world?
Your story might just be the reminder someone else needs today.
